Colostomy

End and Loop

End - post abd-peritoneal resection/low rectal tumours
Loop - temporary to protect distal anastaosis/ primary anastamosis not possible and planned delayed reconstruction (infection, ischaemia)

inspect:
- usually Lt side
- wide bore
- no sprout
- more faecal like/solid matter
- scar (previous surgery)
- perineal scar - no anal orifice

look for complications
- skin excoriation
- retraction/prolapse
- stricturing
- parastomal hernia

output:
- higher colostomies: ~300ml
- lower colostomies: ~100ml

time for delayed closure - when inflammation and oedema settles (~10-12wks)
